Many larval stage critters spend their time floating around. With hardly anything they can use to hide from predators, their best option is to camouflage themselves by being transparent.
Check out this bug-eyed boy, a post-larval stage mantis shrimp. Still quite transparent, but with colour slowly seeping in. He will soon find life on the seabed more appropriate when he gets a bit too chunky to keep swimming about! 👊🐻
