What it REALLY feels like to learn how to code👇🏼

It was around 7 PM, I already worked a 9 hour day as an engineer, and just got home from the gym.

It was time for me to spend the last 2 hours of my day learning Java, a brand new language and concept (OOP) to me.

I was trying to change the icon on one of the tabs in my simple app. It was so hard because I still didn’t understand OOP fully, but I wanted to change the icon so bad that I couldn’t give up. One line of code, 2 hours, and I couldn’t get it to work.

I started crying. @markdalton_ came in the room and said “Lilly it’s okay. Let me help you.” Since he knew Java already, Android development was a little bit easier to learn for him. Together, we figured it out and then went to sleep.

I ALWAYS look back to that night and think “that’s what it really feels like to be a beginner.” At times you feel lost, hopeless, and just maxed out at even a simple task. But I’m hear to tell you, it gets easier. Even if you have to break out the tissues, cry it out, go to sleep, and try again tomorrow. I’ve been there, done that. It happens to the best of us!

I’ll never forget where I started. If you are feeling even remotely like this, just know those moments are the ones you will remember forever. So push through them! Be the person that gives it one more try tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day.
